1. Introduction

Welcome to Understudy (the “App”), operated by Understudy Technologies LLC (“we,” “us,” or “our”). Understudy helps actors prepare for roles by importing script content, rehearsing scenes, and reviewing performance feedback. This privacy policy explains what information we handle, how we use it, and the choices you have.

2. Information We Collect and Process

We handle the following information to operate the App and deliver its features:

  • Account Information: We receive and store your account identifier and, when supplied by your sign-in provider, your email address and display name. We also process authentication information to sign you in and manage access to your account.
  • Script Content: When you import script content, the App processes it on your device and saves the imported content, extracted text, and associated details in the App’s local storage. These details include the script title and your selected character.
  • Speech and Rehearsal Information: When you use voice rehearsal, the App and our service providers process microphone audio, conversation text, relevant script content, and related rehearsal information to support the conversation and provide feedback. Section 4 explains how information is sent to service providers.
  • Usage and Technical Information: We store account-linked records of your rehearsal activity, including session identifiers, dates, duration, completion status, and usage totals. We also process technical information, such as connection and error diagnostics, to operate and troubleshoot the App.
  • Subscription Information: We process information about your purchases, subscription status, and access to paid features.
  • Support Information: If you contact us, we receive the contact information, messages, and materials you choose to provide.
  • Optional Rehearsal Feedback: If you choose to submit a rehearsal rating and confirm the sharing notice, we receive a review copy of the captured transcript and related session details, which can include script excerpts, assistance requests and results, and technical diagnostics. We also retain the rating and a record of your confirmation. This feedback attachment does not include an audio recording.

3. How We Use Information

We use this information to:

  • Create, authenticate, and manage your account.
  • Import and organize script content, remember your selected character, and make your scripts available in the App.
  • Provide rehearsal features, including speech recognition, conversation, audio generation, and line accuracy feedback.
  • Manage subscriptions, verify access to paid features, and calculate usage limits.
  • Send welcome messages and other service-related communications, and use account and rehearsal activity information to manage those communications.
  • Respond to support and privacy requests, troubleshoot problems, and maintain the App’s security and reliability.
  • Review rehearsal feedback you explicitly choose to share to understand problems and improve Understudy.
  • Meet applicable legal obligations and protect our rights and the safety of our users.

4. Service Providers and Disclosure

We disclose information to service providers as needed to deliver and operate Understudy. These include providers of:

  • Authentication, cloud hosting, databases, and other technical infrastructure.
  • Artificial intelligence, speech recognition, transcription, conversation, and audio generation.
  • Payment processing and subscription management.
  • Email delivery and contact management.

The information disclosed depends on the feature or service involved. When you use voice rehearsal, microphone audio is streamed to service providers, and relevant script text, script details, and conversation information are transmitted for processing. This processing enables the App to understand your speech, find and read script passages, and respond during rehearsal.

Account and subscription information is processed by providers that support sign-in and paid features. Contact details and relevant account and rehearsal activity information are used by communication providers to deliver and manage service-related messages.

We may also disclose information when required by law or when reasonably necessary to enforce our rights or protect Understudy, our users, or others.

5. Retention, Deletion, and Your Choices

We retain account, subscription, usage, and support information for as long as needed to provide the App, respond to requests, comply with applicable legal obligations, maintain security, and resolve disputes. Retention depends on the type of information and the purpose for which it is held.

You can delete imported script content using the controls in the App. You can request deletion of information we hold about your account or usage by contacting hello@understudy.app. We may need to verify your identity before acting on a request. We handle requests in accordance with applicable law, including any requirements to retain particular records.

Submitting rehearsal feedback is optional. Tapping a rating alone does not upload a review attachment; you can cancel the confirmation. Shared transcript and diagnostic attachments expire 90 days after submission and are removed by scheduled cleanup. Ordinary session metadata, the rating, and confirmation records can remain under our general retention practices. Account deletion includes these feedback records. This review-copy policy does not govern information processed by service providers to deliver the live rehearsal or revoke a submission already accepted by the server.

You can control microphone access through your device settings and choose whether to use voice rehearsal. Depending on where you live, you may also have rights to access, correct, or obtain a copy of your personal information, or to object to or restrict certain processing. Contact us to exercise these rights.

6. Data Security

We use reasonable technical and organizational measures designed to protect information from unauthorized access, loss, misuse, or alteration. No system is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

7. Policy Updates

We may update this privacy policy to reflect changes in our practices or for operational, legal, or regulatory reasons. When we make material changes, we will notify you through the App, by email, or by another reasonable method. The effective date above identifies the applicable revision.
