Welcome to Understudy (the 'App'). Understudy helps actors prepare for roles by importing scene materials, organizing lines, rehearsing scenes, and reviewing performance feedback. This privacy policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have.
2. Information We Collect
We collect and use information from you and from your use of the App to operate Understudy and deliver its features:
- Account Information: This includes your email address, first name, last name, and authentication information.
- Profile Information: You may choose to provide optional details such as your display name, stage name, headshot, professional role, links, union affiliations, and bio.
- Scene Content: We collect text, PDFs, images, scene details, character names, lines, directions, collection names, and other materials you import, create, or edit in the App.
- Speech and Rehearsal Data: When you rehearse, we may process microphone audio, transcripts, timing, accuracy, and related rehearsal activity.
- Device and Usage Data: We collect information about how you interact with the App, such as feature usage, app performance, diagnostics, and engagement patterns.
You decide what to bring into the App. We receive and store whatever you choose to import, record, or create.
3. How We Use Information
We use the information we collect to:
- Create, authenticate, and manage your account.
- Import, extract, structure, save, and organize scene content.
- Provide rehearsal features, including script reading, speech recognition, transcription, audio generation, and line accuracy feedback.
- Personalize your experience, remember your settings, and improve the App using usage patterns, diagnostics, support feedback, and other operational information.
- Provide support, respond to requests, debug issues, and maintain security.
- Communicate with you about updates, features, account activity, and other service-related information.
Understudy does not claim ownership of your scene content, scripts, recordings, voice, likeness, or other materials you bring into the App. We do not use those materials to train models.
4. Service Providers and Disclosure
We do not sell your personal information, scene content, scripts, recordings, voice, likeness, or other materials you bring into the App. We do not use those materials to train models, and we do not authorize our service providers to train models on them.
We share information only as needed to provide, maintain, protect, and improve Understudy, including with:
- Cloud hosting, database, storage, authentication, analytics, crash reporting, and messaging providers.
- Speech recognition, transcription, text extraction, audio generation, and other processing providers that help deliver App features.
- Payment or subscription providers, if you purchase a paid plan.
- Legal, safety, or compliance recipients when required by law, to enforce our rights, or to protect Understudy, our users, or others.
Scene content you import or record (text, PDFs, images, and audio) is sent to and processed by these providers as part of delivering features such as text extraction, transcription, and audio generation. By using these features, you are choosing to send that content through those providers for that limited purpose.
5. User-Directed Sharing
When you choose to share a scene or collection with people in your cast, Understudy discloses that content to the recipients you select. Sharing creates a separate copy in each recipient's account, and you may not be able to remove that content from their library after it has been shared.
You are responsible for the content you share and for who you share it with. Once shared, recipients can keep, read, and use their copy through the App, and Understudy cannot retrieve those copies on your behalf. Only share content you are comfortable each selected recipient holding indefinitely.
6. Data Retention and Deletion
We keep personal information and scene content for as long as needed to provide the App, comply with legal obligations, resolve disputes, maintain security, and enforce our policies.
You are responsible for removing content you no longer want stored in Understudy. You can delete scenes, collections, and your account at any time using the controls in the App, or contact us for help. Deleted content may remain for a limited time in backups, logs, or systems where immediate deletion is not technically practical.
7. Data Security
We take the security of your information seriously and use reasonable technical and organizational measures designed to protect it from unauthorized access, loss, misuse, or alteration. No system is perfectly secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
8. Your Choices and Rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or export certain personal information, or to object to or restrict certain processing. You can update some information directly in the App, delete your account, or contact us for help with privacy requests.
9. Cookies and Tracking Technologies
The App uses analytics and similar technologies to understand feature usage, engagement patterns, performance, and reliability. This helps us improve Understudy. We do not use cookies to track your activity outside of Understudy.
10. Policy Updates
We may update this privacy policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or for operational, legal, or regulatory reasons. When we make material changes, we will notify you through the App, by email, or by another reasonable method.
